- “What do you mean taking a year off acting?” Elaboration
- “Wait what? You are going to be developing things and talking to kids about corruption?” Elaboration
- “What does that mean?” Elaboration
- “The kids?” Clarification
- “So, speaking about politics and speaking about corruption, you recently were ill-used in the defense of Harvey Weinstein,” Colbert said, changing the subject.
- “This is good though, isn’t it?” Asks about the rum
- “You have a different persona when you are on vacation?”
- “What’s going on here?”
- “What do you mean apparently? What are you talking about?” Elaboration
- “What is your wedding guest vibe? What are you like at the wedding?”
- “Why would that be?” Elaboration
- “You and who?” Clarification
- “Wait, what do you mean?” Clarification

- “What is wrong with that man?”

- Stephen makes a lot of “moves” in this interview with Jennifer Lawrence
- He introduces Jennifer mentioning the popular films she has participated in
- Stephen plays a clip from her newest movie- Red Sparrow- to grab audience’s attention
- ↑ I like this move because it immediately draws people in
- “Please Welcome Jennifer Lawrence” as he walks over and greets her with a hug
- Stephen starts with light conversation right off the bat
- Starts talking about Jennifer interviewing Kim Kardashian when she took over for Jimmy Kimmel one night
- He shows picture of Kim Kardashian and her
- I like this move because it creates a visual for people who did not watch the interview. In addition, starting off like this causes the interviewee to be relaxed and conversational. It allows her to be herself.
· The very first question, “What did you make of the experience? Not as easy as it looks- is it?” leads to Jennifer talking about how she felt about the interview experience. Her response shows her humor and is one of the reasons why people love her.
- Stephen jokes/ teases her when Jennifer comments sarcastically
- He leans in engaged, uses hand gestures, and has a lot of facial expressions towards her sarcastic and humorous comments
- The tone of the interview is very casual and informal
- The purpose is to create a relaxed atmosphere so conversation flows naturally
- Stephen draws out her everyday life because the audience wants to get to know more of who she is
- He follows along with her chill vibes and the moves she makes
- Jennifer almost immediately puts her heels on the chair so she could chill out
- She takes her shoes off and he immediately follows
- Colbert’s interview style is energetic and free
- He tweaks his moves to compliment/ connect with his interviewee
- Goes along with her humor throughout the interview
- Within moments of sitting down on the couch, Colbert pulls out a hidden bottle of Cuban Rum as he initiates the shots
- In my opinion, this is the best move Stephen makes because it carries throughout the interview.
- Both let loose as they trade shots while sharing anecdotes
- When Jennifer wanders off, he tries to reel her back in to focus in a natural conversational manner
- He waits for her to finish the shot and holds his glass waiting for her
- After the first shot, he asks her, “So, you are taking the year off?”
- ↑This question needed to be asked as there were rumors spreading.
- It yields an interesting answer; she reveals her humanitarian work of informing students about the pitfalls of big business influencing politics.
- As she starts to answer, Stephen pours the second shot of rum.
- Stephen shakes her hand to congratulate her and lifts glass to hers in a cheerful manner
- Colbert commiserates with her as she talks about Harvey Weinstein
- ↑ The question he asks about Jennifer being “ill-used” yields a vague answer. I feel like the audience did not get more information on the matter.
- Colbert initiates third shot of rum
- He tries to draw out her party side
- Asks if the rum is good which leads to her talking about vacation “Gale”
- Pulls out picture of Jennifer and her pal Amy Schumer at her wedding
- I like this move because it is another visual
- “What is your wedding guest vibe like?” This is an interesting response. It leads to Jennifer spilling part of an entertaining story. Colbert makes a move of lifting his glass to hers which encourages her to share some of the story.
- Questions such as “What is wrong with that man” leads to vague answers because it is not necessarily expecting a response
- Colbert asks follow up questions for elaboration or clarification
- Ends it by saying they need to take a break
- Him and Jennifer make a last joke before commercial
Some more observations:
*Jennifer has shorter responses to his initial questions. She shares things that do not go with Colbert’s questions. He often had to ask follow up questions, elaborations, and clarifications.
